Every year, Madrid is dyed in rainbow colours as locals and visitors alike come together to enjoy and demonstrate. From parades to concerts and street parties, Madrid Pride is an unforgettable experience that truly embodies the spirit of the city. In this article we tell you everything you need to know about Madrid Pride 2024. Find out!
History of the Madrid Pride
Pride in Madrid, known locally as Orgullo, has a rich and vibrant history that dates to the late 1970s. Initially, it was a small local event, more of a political demonstration than the massive celebration it is today. The first parade was held in 1978, just three years after Spain’s transition to democracy.
Each year brought new milestones like the legalization of same-sex marriage in Spain in 2005 or hosting WorldPride in 2017 – an event that set new attendance records.
Over the years, Madrid Pride has grown exponentially, becoming one of the biggest and most popular Pride events in the world. It’s evolved from a modest march into a week-long festival full of concerts, parties, sports contests, art exhibitions and many other cultural activities. The parade itself is now an extravagant spectacle that attracts millions of people from all corners of the globe.
